Character Stories
Character Details
A member of the Masked Fools. A woman who constantly seeks ‘fun.’ She presses her ear to the walls in hopes of hearing a story that will amuse her. While she maintains a dignified air about her, there are only immature pursuits in her mind. All who have let down their guard in her presence find themselves spilling all their deepest secrets and most embarrassing memories.
Character Story: Part I
“What brings you here?”
The lady simply smiles at the guard, concealing the thrumming of her heart.
“Is that a question you have to ask?”
She tucks her sleeves away, exposing the shining mask hanging at her hip.
A pause, then the guard stands aside and lets the lady pass.
Inside the tavern, the young lady is greeted to all sorts of sights that not even she could dream of. She toes the line between paradise and a nightmare with every step she takes, bringing her further in.
Without any warning, slender fingers wrap themselves around her arm. The telltale sound of a bell rattles as the culprit giggles, followed by the concerned yelp of a certain man. With a squeak, the young lady stumbles to the side, falling into the curtain that conceals—
“Ah. So this is…”
“Yes. We keep our promises.”
“Hah. I’m not concerned about promises from fools like you.”
“You’re one of us now, you know…”
Character Story: Part II
“Helina, you’re reading something new again? Why, I just bought you a cart of them last week! Don’t tell me you’ve already gone through all of them.”
“...I’m sorry.”
“Sigh… Don’t apologize. It’s a scholarly pursuit. You’re in a better position than your cousins. If you keep this up, you’d be on track to becoming the pride of the Nightingale Family.”
…
“Ah, it almost passed my mind. Helina, I heard you have gotten into a spat with that lad from the Oak Family again. My, you two are as fickle as the weather. One minute, you two are friends, and the next, you’re at each other’s throats… Since you two were children, you’ve been like this!”
“...I don’t want to talk about it.”
“...Very well. But you should mind your tongue around him. I hear he’s next in line to become the head.”
“And that concerns me… how, exactly?”
“Helina… You are a member of the Nightingale Family. You will need friends especially now that you’re of age and especially ones of—”
“—high power? I’m nowhere near close to being your successor, Master. I don’t see how the politics of your position would have anything to do with someone like me.”
…
“I have other dreams… that have nothing to do with Penacony. Or the Family.”
Character Story: Part III
In this Dreamscape Moment of Blue Hour, time is frozen.
“Why’d you bring me here, anyway?”
The young man produces a basket behind him. Flowers and sweets lay atop the woven wicker and patterned red and white cloth.
“Huh.”
“You wished for a picnic, did you not?”
“At night?”
“Less chances to be seen by others, no?”
Still, the two sit down together. There was no one to witness as the two brush shoulders and indulge in sweets. It was a simple meeting between old friends. Smiles were traded over the moonlit sky.
Soon, silence takes over the air. There were no more stories to tell – they knew each other too well already. However, the woman couldn’t resist the urge to speak and break the fragile atmosphere.
“...You do know the implications of taking me here, right?”
“Implications?”
“If anyone else sees us here, I mean.”
“Let them talk.”
“...I see.”
She swallows her last forkful of pie. She isn’t sure if it’s the treat that makes her wings flutter ever-so-slightly.
Character Story: Part IV
“Happy birthday!”
The siblings gather around the young girl. He holds the cake as she sways and sings a melody. Slowly, a faint flush comes upon the cheeks of the young girl.
“Jeez, you two didn’t need to do all this.”
“You’re smiling.”
“...Am not.”
“You’re blushing.”
“Am not!”
After the brief fanfare, the three sit together beneath the warm sunlight filtered by leaves. Three pairs of little wings flutter with each bite of the cake, with every laugh shared, with every tale exchanged. And as the sky turns an orange hue—
“When we get older… we should go explore the world.”
“Explore…”
“...the world?”
“Yeah. We can be a traveling troupe if we need Credits. I’ll recite poetry, Robin will sing…”
“...And me?”
“Oh, you? I guess you can tag along too.”
“...Really.”
“I was talking to Robin only. I wasn’t talking to you.”
“You’re too mischievous.”
“Hehe. Am I?”
